RE: Uneven tire wear on 5vr

One thing for sure... you can't ignore the wearing... the tread will eventually peal off the carcass and the damage may be catastrophic... not to mention it will probably happen at a bad time...

RE: Modifying small nozzle for diesl fuel on 99 F-350

I took mine out at a truck stop in Wyoming. Almost out of fuel and only Diesel pump in many miles. Needle nose and box cutter did the trick. Good Luck.
Form follows function... Amazing what necessity can do... :)

RE: Modifying small nozzle for diesl fuel on 99 F-350

Ford has a TSB for this problem on a slow fill up. A new filler tube.
Would appr. the TSB # also... I did ream mine out with a dremel tool so that it would accept the larger nozzle... but pumping the last three gallon to fill the tank is a flat out pain.

RE: Onan gas model 5.5 generator problem - any ideas??

Have you cleared the fault code from the memory? (example) If cleaning the battery fixed the problem and you didn't clear the code, it will continue to shut down and give the same fault code. Paid a repair center for that little piece of information.. :)

RE: Easy Lube Wheels

Count me on the never use side.. filling the inside of the hub with grease will only help it retain heat, blow the rear seal & grease the brake shoes really good... sooner or later using a grease gun to lube wheel bearings will cause trouble... there's enough out there without asking for more. :)

RE: Question about rear kitchens:-)

Have a 28' Yellowstone 5th wheel.. no prbm towing... only one holding tank in rear for sink... shower and black water tanks are in center of trailer... like the floor plan... only prbm I experience is that pots, pans, dry foods, etc get tossed like pancakes while traveling. :)

RE: Oil Filter for Onan

Hi all, new to the forum today.
About this thread concerning oil filter substitutes, there are more important issues than proper fit.
The Onan 122-0645 filter (and most Onan oil filters)has an internal bypass valve rated at 8-11 pounds/pressure and a no-drain valve to keep the filter charged so the engine doesn't starve for oil upon next start-up.
I haven't checked all the filters that cross to this Onan but I have seen the Fram PH2870A and NAPA 1374 and neither have the bypass valve but may be no-drain. The WIX 51374 and 51764 (higher capacity) have it all, but the rating of the bypass valve is unknown. That said, for a buck or two, I prefer the peace-O'-mind knowing the life's blood of my (expensive) durable engine is coursing along properly, guarded by the manufacturer's precise filter design.
Just my $.02
Welcome to the forum.
To set the recod straight. NAPA 1374 and WIX 51374 are the same exact filter, off of the same line, just different paint. The WIX plant that makes WIX, NAPA and a long list of OEM filters, including Ford is just a few miles down the road from us.
In my experience, WIX will step up to the plate and make things right before most OEMs will. Have personal experience with those folks and seen them in action.
Many OEMs will mark up any part at least 100%, some more than that, including Cummins Onan.
It costs around $1.00 to make the smaller filter such as the ones under discusion. I don't mind paying a little extra to get a superior product but paying extra for an OEM, just because it is OEM is in my opinion, wasting your money.
When you ask NAPA/WIX to cross an OEM number and they hand you a replacement filter, its the same or better than the OEM. Its not a "will fit cause the threads are the same", it'll have the same flow rate, any valving (by-pass or anti-drain back) same filter (micron) rating. Those people do nothing but filters and know their business.
Personally wouldn't use a Fram unless I had no other choice. NAPA/WIX, Baldwin, Fleetguard and a whole long list of other all make good filters. If they didn't they'd been out of the filter business in short order from folks taking them to court.
In our business, we use a few hundred filters a week, oil, fuel, air and coolant.
Think I know filters.
Hey Gunny... can you "expand" on not liking Fram?

Navigating on thisForum

Hey Mr. Moderator... Is anyone going to fix this forum so that if there's another page to a thread, it's always assessable from the bottom of the page your on? ... Or when another topic is selected, the cursor goes back to the top of the thread? Kind of aggravating to have slide the cursor back to the top of the page every time.. :)

RE: diesel engine respond

I think all the 6.0 bashing is baesd on the service history of the engine, which is poor by most reports. Personally, I would not own one. I think even the good ones are going to be trouble prone in the future.
I have a 7.3L Powerstroke. A fine engine. However, it is mated to the awful 4R100 transmission. Please talk all the smack you want about my tranny. I wont get offended.
Too bad they never offered a 7.3/5R100 combo.
Brian's Truck Shop, in Lead Hill, Arkansas can make your trany bullet proof.. I mean better than "new"... :)

RE: Dinnette backrest pulling away from slide

Had the same problem.. My slide raises up when moved in for traveling. I felt that there was too much stress on that connection point while traveling... Made a spacer from wood and carpet which we insert at the mid point of the slide to support the raised edge.. No problem since:)

RE: E-Z Lube wheel bearing maintenance

I use the zerk fitting to keep grease on the bearings with very good results. It doesn't take much grease to keep the system well supplied. You want to make sure the grease gun is a manual one and is operated slowly in order to assure the grease seal is not ruptured by too much pressure. I have had no problems in the past three years of ownership.
Depending on the size of the hubs and the frequency you add grease three years may not have been long enough to get the old grease purged from the outer bearings. The amount of miles you have put on the trailer in three years may not have been enough to wear the seals out either so I would say that luck has been on your side so far. So, how do you know if the bearings are worn out or if anything in the brake assembly has broken? Here's a little bit of info. My high end 5er (Monaco) with it's name brand 6000 lb axles (Dexter)had inner bearings manufactured in Romania and outers from China. Where were your bearings made?
One other thing, how do you know your seals are not ruptured by too much pressure until you have started a trip and need the brakes to work?
Ahhhhhh - awesome combination.
Romanian inners and Chinese outers!
What should that combo be called ??

RE: E-Z Lube wheel bearing maintenance

Pump the grease in untill all the old stuff comes out and new grease starts to appear.
When you do that the entire inside of the hub is filled with grease. When it gets warm and expands where will it go? There is no air space so it will travel the path of least resistance, which will eventually be the inner seal, then on to the brakes. When do you inspect the bearings and races for wear and the brake components for wear and damage? How long do you think that inner seal will last?
I was thinking about that this morning as I packed my new bearings and installed the new outer races, adjusted the brakes and blew the brake dust out of the assembly. Since the inspection needs to be done anyway, why take the chance that there are worn or damaged components that will ruin your vacation and cost you many times the amount it would have cost you to do it right the first time?
Gold star to gunpilot... also, ever hear of "churning"? Can happen when the brgs are packed so full of grease that the rollers start skidding instead of turning in the race. Flat spots, heat & failure are next. Do the job right.. enough prbms out there without looking for them... :)

RE: Wet floor after towing in rain...

The bottom gasket above the wheels is leaking. Those wheels are like power washers when the road is wet. You are running the risk of rotting out the floor if not stopped. Had same prbm on a Yellowstone, took a new gasket to stop the leaking when pulling on wet roads.

RE: Maxxair and Rain Sensing Fan-Tastic Fan

If you read the instructions that came with your Fan-Tastic Vent, it says: "Never place a Maxx-Air style cover over, or filter on ceiling fan. Greatly restricted airflow, increased sound levels and electronic component failures will occur." If you don't have the instructions, call their technical support at 1-800-521-0298 and ask them directly.
This is right out of the instruction manual.. no more to be said, except, I have a Fan-tastic fan in a 2001 5th wheel that never has failed to close if needed. :)
